Confetti Nails! From The Beauty Department

CONFETTI NAILS

photos/post/graphic design: Kristin Ess post sponsored by Beauty.com
There are so many reasons to celebrate — your birthday, friends’ birthdays, holidays and every day in between. Today we’re partnering up with Beauty.com to celebrate theirFriends & Family Event (which is happening now!) and to show you a crafty way to add this pretty party to your nails. My favorite part about this manicure is that you’re just punching out tissue paper circles and applying them to the nail. No major skills required, unlike most nail art! Here we go:
  1. Punch out tissue paper circles. Put about 5-7 pieces on top of each other to get a good solid punch.
  2. Paint the base of the nails with any color you want. We used Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Nail Lacquer in Cruising because clearly metallic gold says party.
  3. Use a pen to pick up the pieces of confetti and lay them down on the wet nail polish. Make a couple pieces overlap and/or cut some of the pieces down so you can lay them against the cuticle as seen in the final photo.
  4. Let some of the confetti pieces hang over the edge and trim them down when you’re done laying them all down.
  5. Once all of the pieces are where you want them, go over the whole nail with a good top coat!
The Beauty.com Friends & Family Event is a twice-yearly event that gives you the rare opportunity to enjoy 20% off your favorite brands, like Urban Decay, Philosophy, Deborah Lippmann & many more. It ends on Friday 11/9 at 11:59pm PST!

I'm going to do these! I'll put a picture up when I do! :)

No Makeup Look! Great for Fall!

Hey Guys!
Here is a video tutorial to show you guys how to do
a no makeup look, with hardly using any makeup
I hope you all enjoy!

Braiding Short Hair!

Hi Guys!
I think this tutorial is awesome!
Though most of you never saw my long hair;
I really miss it, but I love The Beauty Department
for doing this because I cut of my hair and
donated it to Locks of Love. Anyway I hope you enjoy!
I'll do it and post a picture
and I'll put a pic at the bottom of
this with my long hair.

BRAIDING SHORT HAIR

photos/post/graphic design: Kristin Ess // post brought to you by Pantene Beautiful Lengths
Well Pantene has earned it’s angel wings as far as we’re concerned. They have an incredible program called Pantene Beautiful Lengths. PBL donates real-hair wigs to women who are going through treatment for cancer, free of charge through the American Cancer Society. We are so proud to be supporters of this program, as it’s a cause very close to my heart. We encourage every single one of you who can donate your hair to do it at least once in your life, if not more. It’s a beautiful feeling when you know you’ve helped a girl or a woman who has lost all of her hair unexpectedly.
Now what happens after you “Make the Cut”? So many girls are terrified to chop their hair for charity in fear that they won’t know how to style it after. The minimum donation is 8 inches, so that usually leaves you with a long bob, bob or shorter. Hopefully this short hair braid tutorial will help you and inspire you, knowing that there are plenty of lovely hairstyles to create on shorter hair. Okay, here we go:
  1. Start with clean, air-dryed hair and find a good side-part. If your hair is naturally wavy or curly you can skip the next step.
  2. Curl your hair with a 1″ barrell iron. Why curl your hair when you’re just going to put it up? Curl helps braids to stay in place. If you add some quick curls to straight hair before braiding, the hairs tend to “hug” each other a little more and not pop out of the braid as much.
  3. Pour a nickel or quarter sized dab of Pantene Beautiful Lengths Strengthen & Smooth Finishing Creme between your palms and rub it around. This will give the hair a little help with hold and add some texture.
  4. Work it into your hair from the roots to ends.
  5. Next, clip off the front sections. These sections should start behind your ear and go up to the front hairline (see photo). Do the same thing on both sides.
  6. Then you’re going to roll the hair in back. Start behind the ear– “gather + roll, gather + roll, gather + roll”. Spray + pin as you go if you need to. Once you get that roll to the bottom, cross over your neck + bobbypin it.
  7. Do the exact same roll on the opposite side. Cross over the neck and bobby pin it (see photo).
  8. This is what the back should look like once you’ve pinned those pieces into place. See how they overlap a little? You want the pieces to cross. Be sure to roll them tight and pin them well. This might take a little practice, but once you get it, it’s very easy.
  9. Alright, now diagonally divide the heavier front section. You’ll want to run 2 braids side by side. Start with the one that will be higher up. I like an inside-out braid for this look because inside-out braids look fuller.
  10. Once you get the braid to the back, twist the tail and pin it into your twists in the back.
  11. Repeat this process for the front braid…
  12. and pin it to the back as well.
  13. The other side can be twisted, braided, just pulled back and pinned– whatever you think looks best. We just pulled it back and pinned it into the twists in back.
  14. Check the back in a hand mirror for any random runaway pieces, then spray it with a strong holding hairspray.
If you donate your hair or if you already have, we want to hear about it! Tell us your story below. And thank you in advance to those of you who will eventually build up the courage to give a portion of your lovely locks to another who needs it even more than you do.

Falling for Fall

Hey Everyone! Even though this video is very short it took me
a week or more to film and make it. So I would appreciate it if
you don't say anything bad about it as it took me a very long
time and I know that it skips a lot.
I hope you guys don't think I'm being mean since I didn't mean that
at all. I hope you really do enjoy it!

Enjoy!
xoxo Hannah

New Camera and Updates

I have some new colors for fall like this one, I really enjoy
doing different colors for each season so, I might do all the oranges. Like this one, and this one
are some awesome colors for fall/halloween, and maybe this yellow, or some other colors
I find fallish. But the main color will be this one.

In case YOU have been wondering why I haven't been putting
up as much stuff that I usually do; that's because my school, has started and it's an
accelerated school so we have lots of homework.

Also the wedding series and the back to school series and any others
I might have started are over.

HOT CROSSED BUN (REMIX)

post/photos/design: Kristin Ess
Lately I’ve noticed lots of emails coming in with requests for shoulder-length hair tutorials. And while this tutorial is nothing different than the braided bun from last week, I wanted to show you just how do-able these tutorials are even if you don’t have long hair. We always want everyone to have a fair shot at looking gorgeous and just because it’s done on a girl with longer hair doesn’t mean you shouldn’t give it a try! The best part about any hair tutorial is modifying it and making it your own, right? I love when people tweet us a picture of a tutorial they tried where they added their own twist. It may not come out exactly the same, but it could sprout inspiration for something really cute! So let me show you how to get the “Hot Crossed Bun” look on short hair…
  1. Use a 1″ barrell curling iron to give the hair some wave when you’re trying to do an updo or chignon on short or fine hair. This will give it texture and bulk it up so you have more to work with.
  2. Add a little water-based texturizing pomade to the root for even more visible texture and bulk. You can see that her fine hair looks full in this photo, right? Now you have something to work with!
  3. Split the hair right behind your ears and push the front sections forward. Take the whole middle section/back and put it in a clear elastic.
  4. Wrap that into a little mini or messy bun. Just see what your hair will do. Every short haircut will do something a little different. If you need to add some hairspray to help, go for it! We did.
  5. Now do an inside-out french braid from the hair line back toward the bun. It’s okay if little pieces pop out. You can pin them at the end.
  6. Tuck the ends of the braid into the bun and secure it using a bobbypin or two or three.
  7. Repeat the previous braid on the other side and pin it into the bun as well.
  8. Pull some soft pieces out around the hair line for a more romantic vibe. Then pin in and spray any little unwanted pieces that might pop out.
GIVE IT A TRY! xo-thebeautydepartment.com

I cannot wait to try this one out!
